A private, personal and relaxed way to see Dutch windmills

Most visitors see Dutch windmills from a tour bus or a busy footpath. The Dutch Windmill Tour takes you there by water instead. In about three hours your private boat leaves Leiden's city centre behind and heads into classic open Dutch landscape, passing 9 windmills on the way to the Kagerplassen, the lakes a little south of the Keukenhof.

It's just you, your group and a local captain-guide. Your captain explains how windmills kept this low-lying land dry and points out the best photo spots, or stays quietly in the background if you'd rather just enjoy the view. Pizza, snacks and drinks are included along the way.

Why book a Dutch Windmill Tour?

A private boat: no sharing with strangers, just your own group and captain.

9 windmills in one trip: seen from the water at boat pace, with time for photos.

City and countryside: a piece of Leiden's historic centre, open polder landscape and the Kagerplassen in a single tour.

Pizza, snacks & drinks: : all included, so three hours on the water never means going hungry.

A local captain-guide: hear the stories behind the mills and the landscape, or sit back and enjoy the ride in quiet.

Every season: an open boat with umbrellas and blankets when necessary in summer, a closed boat for bigger groups in winter.

“We had a great time on the boat with Martijn. Amazing town and Martijn was a very nice and informative guide. We were in total 7 people, having a team evening during a business trip, but I would do it again also with family or friends. 10/10 :)"

“Highly recommend this company for a Leiden canal tour!
We requested a custom tour for a group of nine with a focus on windmills. Jonathan delivered a perfect three-hour itinerary starting in the city center that took us out to see nine windmills.
Our skipper was very hospitable and highly knowledgeable about the local area, and the team even provided packets with details about each windmill.
We were looking forward to the included pizza, beer, and wine and were delighted to see that Jonathan included juices and soft drinks for those in our party who don’t drink alcohol and also surprised us with extra snacks and desserts."

FAQ

Answers to our most common questions

What is the boarding location for Dutch Windmill Tour?

The small group tour boards at De Beestenmarkt in Leiden, about a 5-minute walk from Leiden Central Train Station. For bigger groups the boarding location is at the Apothekersdijk, about a 5-minute walk from Leiden Central Train Station.

How long does an Dutch Windmill Tour last?

The Dutch Windmill Tour lasts approximately 3 hours. If you'd like something shorter or longer, send us a message, and we’ll see how we can accommodate you.

What do I get to see during the Dutch Windmill Tour?

You'll pass 9 windmills, a piece of Leiden's historic city centre and classic open Dutch landscape, before reaching the Kagerplassen, the lakes a little south of the Keukenhof. Your captain points out the highlights and the best photo moments along the way.

In which language is the Dutch Windmill Tour given?

Our tours are available in English and Dutch.

Can I cancel or reschedule my booking?

Plans can change and unforeseen things can happen; we understand!  The Dutch Windmill Tour for small groups can be cancelled or rescheduled free of charge up to 48 hours before departure. The Dutch Windmill Tour for bigger groups can be cancelled or rescheduled free of charge up to 72 hours before departure. If you book multiple big boats with us, we offer free cancellation up to 1 month before booking.

Do we go inside a windmill?

The tour is a boat trip: you see the windmills from the water and don't go ashore to visit them. Would you like to add a stop? Send us a message and we'll look at the options.

What time of day does the Dutch Windmill Tour run?

The tour runs in daylight, so you can see the windmills and the landscape properly. You can select your preferred starting time during the booking process. On long summer days a late-afternoon departure gives you the softest light for photos.

Is the tour accessible for guests with limited mobility?

Guests need to step from the shore onto the boat. Unfortunately, we currently don't offer wheelchair access on our smaller boats. One of the bigger boats has a wheelchair lift. If limited mobility might be an issue, please contact us so we can discuss your situation and look for solutions together.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Our tours go ahead in most weather. The open boat carries umbrellas and blankets, and in winter bigger groups sail on a closed boat. If conditions are unsafe, for example strong wind, storms or ice, we'll contact you to reschedule. It is breezier on open water than in the city, so bring an extra layer and dress for the weather.

What is the best way to see windmills in the Netherlands as a tourist?

The famous windmill sites are beautiful but busy. A private boat tour from Leiden shows you windmills in the landscape they were built for, from the water, with no crowds and no coach schedule. Leiden is a short train ride from Amsterdam, The Hague and Schiphol Airport, so the tour fits easily into a day trip

How far in advance do I have to be at the boarding location?

We advise you to be at the departure spot 10 minutes before departure so we can maximize your time on the water during the tour.

How many people can join a Dutch Windmill Tour?

The small group tour is for 2 to 6 passengers: €179 per person for the first 2 and €75 for each extra person. The bigger group tour starts at 8 passengers and has availability up to 30. Is your group larger? Send us a message, and let's see what we can arrange.

Does the Dutch Windmill Tour visit the Keukenhof

No. The tour turns around at the Kagerplassen, a little south of the Keukenhof, and does not stop at the gardens. The Keukenhof is only open in spring; if you'd like to combine both on one day, send us a message and we'll help you plan the timing.

When is the Dutch Windmill Tour available?

The Dutch Windmill Tour runs all year. From April through September you sail on an open boat. From October through March bigger groups sail on a closed boat. You can book through the booking buttons under the tours.

Can we request a custom route or tour?

We are happy to create a custom, personal experience together with you. So please don't hesitate to convey your ideas and contact us.

Tours can be ordered through our website by clicking on the booking button under the tours. The button will open up a calendar where you can select your preferred date and time, select how many guests will be joining the tour, and select any other tour-specific options. For the Dutch Windmill Tour, you can find it on this page here.

Can I bring my own food and drinks on the Dutch Windmill Tour?

Pizza, snacks and drinks are all included, so generally there's no need, but you are welcome to bring your own. In case of special dietary requirements, please contact us by phone or through our contact form.

Is there a guide on board the Dutch Windmill Tour?

During our tours the captain on board will be your guide. They know the windmills, the landscape and the city of Leiden, and will tell you about the sights, history and fun facts along the route. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the captain. They are at your service.

Is there a toilet aboard?

One of the bigger boats has a toilet on board. The smaller boats unfortunately have no room for that so it's good to keep that in mind before departure and during the trip.

We had a private cruise for 6 people with Johnathan. Brilliant experience! Communication was easy and the boat trip was wonderful with lots of information about Leiden and even some snacks and drinks on board. If you’re in Leiden it’s definitely the best way to see the city. Highly recommend!

We are a French senior couple. Yesterday we had a beautiful experience cruising with Discover Canal Cruises on Leiden city canals for 90 minutes. Just the two of us and our guide on a small electric boat. Martijn had even prepared a special information sheet in French so we wouldn’t miss any of his explanations. And special treat: we enjoyed some hot coffee with traditional waffles and licorice candies on the way.
I strongly recommend this company if you want a real personal experience.
